News & Notes | New Board President at Sky City Entrepreneur Center

Registration is now open for the rebranded Nashville Innovation Summit.

From Maryville:

Leigh Cowden, Founder of Vermillion Law, is the new Board President at the Sky City Entrepreneur Center. She’s a U.S. Air Force veteran, wife, mother, attorney, and entrepreneur. She has more than 30 years of business experience in many industries, including aviation, medical devices, insurance, securities and financial planning, hospitality, transportation logistics, university education, publishing, real estate investing, and both litigation and transactional legal practice.

“I was raised by a business owner and am a serial entrepreneur myself, so I really appreciate the heart and soul people put into entrepreneurial endeavors and how important small businesses are to our communities and our economy,” Cowden says. “I’ll do whatever I can to support their efforts!”

From Chattanooga:

Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly has appointed Charita Allen as the city’s new Senior Advisor for Economic and Workforce Development. According to published reports, it is her second tour of duty with city government, having served from 2017 to 2021 as Deputy Administrator of Economic Development. Most recently, Allen served as Director of Workforce Development at the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

From Nashville:

Registration is now open for the rebranded Nashville Innovation Summit. Formerly known as the Nashville Analytics Summit, the event on September 30 and October 1 offers curated tracks led by experts with hands-on experiences to develop participants’ skills and prepare them and their organizations for even more innovation and opportunity. From Knoxville:

The Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education, part of the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII), has named Gregory D. Peterson as Program Director of its Data Science and Engineering (DSE) graduate program. Peterson assumed the role on August 1.

The position was recently left vacant by Russell Zaretzki, who stepped down to focus more on his equally important role as an Associate Professor with the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Zaretzki was instrumental in the launch of the DSE program and has led the program since then.

“We were extremely fortunate to have had Russell at the helm of the DSE program since its launch eight years ago. Thanks to his vision and leadership, we’re well positioned to continue the growth of the program and prepare even more students to meet the ever-changing needs of our data-driven world,” said Brynn Voy, UT-ORII Education Director as well as Director of the Bredesen Center.

From Oak Ridge:

Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS), managing contractor for the Y-12 National Security Complex and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, TX, has honored Manhattan Legacy Service LLC, and Kiesler Police Supply Inc., as Small Businesses of the Year for fiscal year 2023. Manhattan Legacy Service has supported the Y-12 National Security Complex since 2017 by providing business and technical services. Kiesler Police Supply has provided Pantex with supplies for the site’s Protective Force since 2015.
