NSF announces solicitation focused on addressing climate change
Sixteen awards are anticipated for regional consortia along with another for a National Office.
Two directorates at the National Science Foundation (NSF) – Geosciences (GEO) and Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) – have announced a new solicitation focused on addressing climate change.
Known as the Regional Resilience Innovation Incubators (R2I2), the federal agency wrote that it expects to make up to 16 Phase-1 awards across all regions of the U.S. as a result of the new solicitation and one award for an R2I2 National Office. NSF anticipates a total budget of up to $10,000,000 will be available in FY 2025 to support Phase-1 proposals and a coordinating office for R2I2 projects, subject to the quality of submitted proposals and the availability of funds.
The cross-directorate solicitation will support community-engaged teams to co-design high-impact solutions to climate-related societal challenges that leverage recent advances in fundamental climate change and Earth system science research. Each R2I2 project will address specific regional climate challenges and will develop and demonstrate solutions to those challenges that can be effectively applied in real-world settings. Investment in R2I2 will leverage past federal investments in and will provide a bridge connecting advancements in basic science with local knowledge, informed decision-making, and technological innovations for societal applications.
Letters of intent are due by 5 p.m. local time on December 16, 2024, and full proposals are due January 16, 2025.
