Historic Tennessee Quantum Communications Research Center coming to Chattanooga

This center will go down in history as the first dedicated next generation quantum communication research and development (R&D) innovation lab directly connected to a real-world network.

Another day, another Chattanooga quantum win! On Aug. 3, IonQ, Inc. and EPB announced plans for the Tennessee Quantum Communications Research Center.

Why is such a center needed? This R&D lab will have Quantum Memory, helping quantum computers and networks reliably share information across long distances. IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi explained it well.

Interconnecting quantum computers at multiple locations and linking them directly to end users lays the foundation for the full suite of applications of quantum communications. Quantum Memories that store and process quantum information over fiber channels are essential building blocks for transforming quantum machines into more powerful long-range architectures.

“Establishing a Quantum Memory R&D capability that sits atop a working fiber optic network will speed the development and deployment of innovative quantum technologies to accelerate commercialization of the Quantum Internet, driving economic growth and job creation within participating communities.”

The details:

  • IonQ will fund the center with a five-year commitment totaling $15 million.
  • EPB will supply the live network development test bed and act as the lead commercialization partner for public- and private-sector use across the broader Tennessee Valley region.
  • The center is estimated to generate economic benefits for Tennessee worth two to three times the $15 million investment, and bring around two dozen jobs.
  • EPB’s quantum assets are projected to generate up to $1.1 billion in community benefit for Chattanooga over the next 10 years.
