The announcement had been previewed during the May 2 meeting of the East Tennessee Economic Council and formally announced on May 8.
The Nuclear COE will serve as a strategic hub for nuclear expertise, engineering, and operational excellence, furthering Amentum’s position at the forefront of nuclear solutions needed for large-scale power generation, advanced energy technologies, and strengthening the national security of the United States.
“The Nuclear Center of Excellence exemplifies Amentum’s commitment to enable the resurgence of our nation’s dominance in the rapidly advancing nuclear industry,” said Mark Whitney, President of Energy & Environment for Amentum. “We will leverage our expertise in the Oak Ridge region pulling upon our rich history of innovative solutions for U.S. energy needs and national security.”
The Nuclear COE’s core mission will support the expansion of nuclear power in large and smaller scale capacities while leveraging decades of Amentum’s global experience in the nuclear industry.
The center will assist in the development of innovative technologies fit for the complexity and high standards of nuclear engineering, including artificial intelligence and automation, as well as safety and cybersecurity solutions. Additionally, the center will work closely with government agencies, strengthening partnerships in the public and private sectors to foster collaboration, share expertise, and drive technological breakthroughs. The center will support the maintenance and modernization of nuclear infrastructure to ensure the safe operation of nuclear facilities.
