Acquirer of Qubitekk Inc. might be looking for a new home
It could depend on a $10 million funding package for a new headquarters in the University of Maryland's Discovery District.
The College Park, MD company that recently announced its purchase of Qubitekk Inc., the partner in the EPB Quantum NetworkSM in Chattanooga, might be relocating if it does not secure $10 million in incentives to build a new corporate headquarters.
That’s according to a report in DC Inno which quoted IonQ Inc.‘s Chief Financial Officer Thomas Kramer. He told the publication that the company would consider leaving Maryland if a proposal in Governor Wes Moore‘s budget to allocate $10 million for a new headquarters fails to pass the General Assembly. The funding would support the construction of a new 100,000-square-foot headquarters with a data center, laboratories, and office within the University of Maryland’s Discovery District.
In early November 2024, IonQ announced that it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the operating assets of Qubitekk Inc., a leading Vista, CA-based quantum networking company. As part of the transaction, the Qubitekk team will join IonQ to further enhance IonQ’s leading position in the quantum networking industry. IonQ anticipates closing the acquisition within the next six months, subject to the satisfaction of certain closing conditions.
Qubitekk was co-founded by Duncan Earl, a former scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory who serves as the company’s Chief Technology Officer.
