Powerhouse lineup planned for the annual Opportunities in Energy event
Opportunities in Energy is an annual event hosted by the Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council.

It’s already November, which means it’s about time for the annual Opportunities in Energy event, hosted by the Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council (TAEBC). This year, the line-up is nothing short of impressive.
Keynote
To kick things off, attendees will hear from Carl Coe, the Chief of Staff for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in a keynote discussion moderated by Marianne Wanamaker, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s own. Coe is in a unique position, managing all aspects of the DOE, including the oversight of more than 150,000 federal employees and a $50 billion annual budget.
Additionally, Coe manages the partnerships with the United States’ 17 national laboratories– including initiatives revolving around advanced energy: artificial intelligence, quantum: fusion, nuclear energy, and critical minerals.
Panel Discussions
The Power of Three
Across East Tennessee, people in the economic development space regularly discuss the “regional assets.” And, by that, they mean the powerhouse triangle of the University of Tennessee, the country’s largest public utility, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and the DOE National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Together, these three government entities serve as regional change-makers.
The founder and CEO of the TAEBC, Cortney Piper, will moderate a panel with UT System President Randy Boyd, ORNL Lab Director Stephen Streiffer, and TVA President and CEO Don Moul.

Restoring America’s Ability to Enrich Uranium
Amir Vexler, the President and CEO of Centrus Energy Corporation, will provide a presentation about the company’s uranium enrichment projects.
Type One Energy
Chris Mowry, the CEO of Type One Energy, will be hosting a panel about Type One Energy’s objectives. The company is fresh off a large business development announcement, where the corporation announced it will be taking over a portion of the historic Bull Run facility. TVA also signed a letter of intent in September to use Type One’s Fusion Energy once it becomes available.

Building Tennessee’s Workforce for What’s Next
In a featured panel, Simba Jonga, the founder of Laborup, Sierra Noe with the Composites Institute (IACMI), and Dr. Allen B. Mackenzie with Tennessee Technological University will break down the challenges and opportunities for building the next generation workforce.
The discussion will be moderated by Wacker’s Robert Hardin.
Inside the Boardroom
A handful of TAEBC’s board members will unveil key initiatives, the conversations behind them, and how various members of the TAEBC are working together to make Tennessee a great place for advanced energy companies.
Panelists will include Steve Seifried from Ameresco, Robert Hardin with Wacker, Stuart Hunter with FirstBank, and Jason Menino with Bridgestone Americas.
Thomas B. Ballard Advanced Energy Leadership Award
This year’s award will be presented by Jean-Luc Palayer, the President and CEO of Orano USA. The award honors exemplary leadership and success in championing, connecting, and strengthening Tennessee’s advanced energy economy.
