Memphis Chamber plans to capitalize on being one of the largest minority-majority cities in the nation

Our neighbors in the state’s largest city in West Tennessee have announced a bold plan.

Noting that it is one of the largest minority-majority cities in the nation, leaders at the Greater Memphis Chamber have announced a new initiative to capitalize of that fact to attract companies that prioritize diversity in their workforces.

Named “Prosper Memphis 2030,” the new strategic growth plan is designed to make the region more inclusive and prosperous including attracting companies in high-growth advanced industries like automotive or medical device manufacturing. The plan notes that those sectors are characterized by their heavy emphasis on research and technology, and their need for talent in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“Prosper Memphis 2030” includes three strategic priorities that will govern its work through 2030:

  • Inclusive jobs. A prosperous Memphis is an inclusive Memphis. The goal is to create 50,000 high-quality jobs, with half of those jobs going to minorities.
  • Diverse industries. A healthy economy has a healthy mix of businesses. The Chamber plans to add 700 new firms in advanced industries.
  • Future-ready talent. The goal is 20,000 STEM graduates per year, with 45 percent of those degrees going to Black students.
