ORNL’s role in Genesis Mission grows, securing six Phase II awards
Phase II awards are multi-year efforts designed to grow projects that have already shown promise for Super Intelligence (SI) breakthroughs.
On Oct. 8, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) announced it was selected for six Phase II awards under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Genesis Mission, a national initiative to “build the world’s most powerful scientific platform.”
This announcement follows ORNL being selected to lead nine Phase I projects and contribute to 32 more over the summer.
ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer said the selections only complement expertise of the lab and its talent.
“These selections align with ORNL priorities in Super Intelligence, quantum, fusion energy, critical materials and user facilities, underscoring ORNL’s focus on transforming discovery into national impact,” he said. “The goal is straightforward — faster, more reliable science that delivers practical results where they matter most.”
Phase II projects:
- AI-empowered design of functional quantum magnets.
- AI-assisted scientific software development for high-performance computing, in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory.
- AI-enhanced rare earth element separation, in partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
- A cross-facility AI platform for particle accelerator operations, in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
- AI-driven design of electronics for extreme environments, in partnership with Fermilab.
- An AI-enabled digital twin platform for fusion experiments, led by Commonwealth Fusion Systems.
With six Phase II awards on top of the nine Phase I projects, ORNL is cementing East Tennessee’s place at the center of national SI research.
