ORNL’s role in Genesis Mission revealed, securing nine awards
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) scientists will lead nine projects and contribute to an additional 32 projects.
On July 22, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the awards at the Genesis Mission Summit in Washington, D.C.
The goal of each DOE-supported Genesis Mission project is to identify emerging pathways toward transformational capabilities, eventually leading to future investment and scale.
“These nine Genesis Mission projects showcase what Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) does best, which is bringing together world-class teams, transformative technologies and unique research facilities to tackle problems that matter to the nation,” ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer said. “By integrating AI with rigorous scientific workflows, our teams will test new methods for accelerating discovery and determine what it takes to scale those capabilities for broad impact.”
ORNL-led projects consist of:
- AI-assisted fusion power plant designs.
- Low-energy AI for scientific discovery.
- AI-accelerated materials development and advanced manufacturing applications.
- AI-enabled discovery of rare earth elements.
- AI-powered operations for self-driving science research.
- AI foundation model development for water forecasting.
- Modeling soil processes with AI.
- AI-driven Earth system prediction.
- AI for next-generation fusion materials development.
Outside of these awards, ORNL also provides foundational support to the Genesis Mission through the American Science Cloud, which integrates DOE’s computing networks across all of its 17 national laboratories.
ORNL already anchors more than 7,000 jobs across East Tennessee, and leading nine national Genesis Mission projects will only continue to attract top talent, job openings and private investment.
