UT-Battelle will continue management of ORNL for next five years

This milestone builds upon UT and Battelle’s successful 25-year partnership.

UT-Battelle, LLC has secured a five-year extension to continue managing Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the U.S. Department of Energy’s largest science and energy laboratory. This marks the latest milestone in the 25-year partnership between the University of Tennessee (UT) and Battelle Memorial Institute, furthering the impact of their collaborative efforts.

Randy Boyd, Chair of the UT-Battelle Board of Directors, praised the university community for its dedication, noting that the partnership enhances UT’s global research influence.

“Our management of ORNL significantly elevates UT’s international research impact,” Boyd said in his newsletter on Friday afternoon.

Since its establishment, UT-Battelle has played a big role in advancing scientific research through a strong partnership with ORNL. Key initiatives include the 2021 launch of the UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII), which fosters research collaborations involving faculty and researchers from across the UT system, including Knoxville, Chattanooga, the Institute of Agriculture, and the Health Science Center. UT-ORII also promotes opportunities for graduate students to work directly with top scientists at ORNL.

Among the partnership’s accomplishments are leadership in high-performance computing, nuclear science, and neutron scattering research, as well as a role in establishing East Tennessee as a premier destination for advanced materials research – through the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences and Shull Wollan Center.

The collaboration has also produced more than 100 technology startups through joint commercialization efforts and continues to attract top researchers through the Governor’s Chair Program. These in-turn create opportunities for hundreds of UT graduate students to work directly with some of the top scientists in the world.

With this extension, UT-Battelle looks forward to furthering opportunities for innovation and reinforcing UT’s status as a global hub of scientific excellence.
