U News | National Science Foundation awards Georgia Tech $20 million for new AI-focused supercomputer

Clemson University's FY26 budget represents a three percent decrease in spending from last year’s record-setting $2.1 billion budget.

From the Georgia Institute of Technology:

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Georgia Tech and its partners $20 million to build a powerful new supercomputer that will use artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate scientific breakthroughs.

Called Nexus, the system will be one of the most advanced AI-focused research tools in the U.S. Nexus will help scientists tackle urgent challenges such as developing new medicines, advancing clean energy, understanding how the brain works, and driving manufacturing innovations.

“Georgia Tech is proud to be one of the nation’s leading sources of AI talent and technologies that are powering a revolution in our economy,” said Ángel Cabrera, President of Georgia Tech. “It’s fitting we’ve been selected to host this new supercomputer, which will support a new wave of AI-centered innovation across the nation. We’re grateful to the NSF, and we are excited to get to work.”

Designed from the ground up for AI, Nexus will give researchers across the country access to advanced computing tools through a simple, user-friendly interface. It will support work in many fields, including climate science, health, aerospace, and robotics.

From the University of South Florida:

The University of South Florida (USF) is taking a bold step to bridge academic innovation with real-world start-up application through a new partnership with Embarc Collective. USF is the first university to join the start-up hub’s new University Partnership Program, helping redefine how higher education institutions can power workforce development and regional economic growth.

The partnership is designed to accelerate the commercialization of university-developed technologies, expand student access to hands-on experience in high-growth start-ups, and support university-affiliated founders with the tools and networks they need to scale.

“This is more than just connecting the dots, it’s the next essential step for how universities must evolve,” USF President Rhea Law said. “This is an important time for higher education in America. We have to be bold and intentional about how we contribute to our communities and fuel our economy. By deepening our partnership with Embarc Collective, and with my joining its Board of Directors, we’re creating more direct pathways for students and faculty to turn ideas into impact and participate in Tampa Bay’s growing innovation ecosystem.”

Through this collaboration, start-ups affiliated with USF and USF CONNECT gain access to Embarc Collective’s full suite of founder support services, including on-demand coaching, a national investor network, and a robust library of startup-building resources. These tools are especially powerful for researchers and engineers translating innovations from lab to market, offering the kind of strategic guidance and connectivity typically reserved for high-growth, venture-backed companies.

From Miami University:

Miami University was awarded $7 million to create a quantum computing workforce as a part of Ohio’s two-year state operating budget. The funds will assist in establishing the Ohio Institute for Quantum Computing Research, Talent, and Commercialization.

The Institute, a partnership between Miami and the Cleveland Clinic, will focus on workforce development, research, and commercialization and will be accessible to all Ohio higher education institutions. By connecting industry needs with academic expertise and hands-on training, the Institute will produce a future-ready workforce with graduates who are prepared to contribute from day one of employment and will advance innovations that benefit Ohio and beyond.

“This groundbreaking partnership between Miami and Cleveland Clinic gives Ohio a competitive advantage in attracting top talent and investment, supporting advanced research, and retaining skilled graduates,” Miami President Gregory Crawford said. “By giving our students the right tools to succeed, we will ensure Ohio develops a workforce ready to lead in quantum innovation.”

From Florida State University:

Florida State University’s Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship (JMC) and Universal AI University (UAi) have launched a groundbreaking research and academic partnership focused on advancing knowledge and practice at the intersection of artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship.

The strategic alliance brings together two globally recognized institutions to collaborate on joint research, academic exchanges, and educational innovation, with a particular emphasis on how AI is transforming entrepreneurial ecosystems — especially in poverty alleviation and family business development.

JMC will contribute leading-edge entrepreneurship curriculum and expertise, while UAi will share its advanced AI research and tools with students and faculty across both institutions. Their collaborative efforts aim to equip the next generation of entrepreneurs with the skills to harness AI for economic and social impact.

A key component of the partnership will be a quarterly webinar series on the intersection of AI and entrepreneurship, jointly hosted by JMC and UAi. The inaugural session will be held at 8 a.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 4, and is open to scholars, practitioners and students worldwide.

From Clemson University:

The Greenville edition of the Charleston Post & Courier reports that Clemson University has approved a $2.05 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year. The budget represents a three percent decrease in spending from last year’s record-setting $2.1 billion budget, though it also includes a 6 percent increase in expenses.

Unlike previous years, revenue growth in FY26 is expected to slow, prompting the university to moderate expenses and prioritize spending on its strategic goals.
