Travis Howerton says RegScale’s “best days are ahead of us”

After co-founding the company about two years ago, the Oak Ridge resident stepped into the CEO role a few weeks ago.

“We have figured out who we are going to be when we grow-up,” says Travis Howerton, Co-Founder of RegScale, who was recently named as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He moved up to the top role after Anil Karmel, the other Co-Founder and previous CEO, stepped down from active management.

“We are a continuous control monitoring company,” Howerton explained. “We built our platform which is flexible but also very robust in its ability to handle customer complexity. We have been recognized by Gartner as a market leader in the compliance automation sector.”

RegScale provides software created by experts in compliance and Regulatory Operations (RegOps). The company helps organizations mitigate risk and improve audit readiness by automating compliance and risk business processes from the very beginning.

Howerton, who resides in Oak Ridge, and Karmel spun out the new product-focused company from C2 Labs in late 2021. The latter founded that company in 2014, and Howerton joined in March 2019 as Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). He also held the post of CTO at RegScale and will continue to serve in both roles for the immediate future.

Describing himself as an operator with experience optimizing organizations at scale, Howerton said that the change in the CEO role is reflective of companies going through phases as they grow from a start-up to a fast growing company with a mature product offering.

“It’s one thing when everything is new and nothing is figured out,” says Howerton. “We now know what we do, how we build it, how we sell it, and how we plan to disrupt the legacy GRC (governance, risk, and compliance) market.”

RegScale is leveraging automation and artificial intelligence in its continuous control monitoring platform to save users money, reduce risk, and increase speed of operations. It does so through automating processes like:

  • Rapid certification which frequently stands between a user and revenue;
  • Evidence of compliance;
  • Continuous controls mapping;
  • Access reviews; and
  • Simplified risk management.

“As a serial entrepreneur, it has been my honor and privilege to partner with Travis to take RegScale from conception to millions in revenue over the past two years,” Karmel said. “I can think of no one better than him to lead the next phase of growth for the company. As a substantial shareholder, I will continue to cheer on and advise Travis and RegScale on its mission to free organizations from manual, paper-based compliance processes.”

For Howerton, it can be summarized with this simple but powerful statement: “Our best days are ahead of us.”
