Swedish inventor launches crowdfunding effort to challenge patent issued to ORNL
The Sweden-based inventor of Hangprinter, an open-source fused deposition modeling system for 3D printers, has launched a crowdfunding initiative to raise the cash needed to challenge Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL’s) “SkyBAAM” 3D printing patent.
The action by Torbjørn Ludvigsen follows action by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to issue a patent for the technology in which a cable-hoisted extruder is used to 3D print large-scale structures. However, shortly after the action became public, open-source advocates like Joshua Pearce were quick to highlight how similar the system is to that introduced by Ludvigsen eight years ago.
