SSTI analyzes SBIR and STTR awards in 2020

The State Science and Technology Institute recently analyzed federal awards during 2020 through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, and we noted several interesting facts.

  • The total number of SBIR/STTR awards made nationally reached 7,305 in 2020.
  • Not surprising, California topped the list at 1,489 awards, more than double those of runner-up Massachusetts with 731 awards. The only states seeing less than 10 awards were Mississippi (5), Alaska (2), North Dakota (2), and Puerto Rico (2).
  • While there are 11 participating agencies in the SBIR/STTR program, only a few agencies account for most awards. Nationally in 2020, the Department of Defense (DoD) made the most SBIR/STTR awards (3,842), followed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) at 1,396, Department of Energy (DOE) at 664, National Aeronautics and Space Administration at 573, and National Science Foundation with 508.
  • There were 68 SBIR or STTR awards made in Tennessee in 2020, and three agencies accounted for nearly 80 percent of the total. DoD topped the list with 26 of those followed by DOE with 16 and HHS with 11.
