Fourteen of the 16 Southeastern Conference schools ranked in top 100 for patents issued

The University of Texas System was ranked #3 nationally with 235 utility patents issued, while the University of Florida placed #9 in the country with 142 issued patents.

Fourteen of the 16 schools that now comprise the expanded Southeastern Conference (SEC) were ranked in the Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents in 2023 by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). The list uses calendar year data provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to highlight universities that play a large role in advancing innovation and invention across the country.

Not surprising, a longtime member and one of the two new SEC schools excelled above the other 12. The University of Texas System was ranked #3 nationally with 235 utility patents issued, while the University of Florida placed #9 in the country with 142 issued patents. The next closest was the Texas A&M University System that ranked #30 with 66 issued utility patents.

Other SEC members, in their order, were:

  • #37 – Vanderbilt University (56);
  • #41 – University of South Carolina (50);
  • #56 – Louisiana State (35);
  • #58 – University of Kentucky (33);
  • #61 – University of Tennessee System (28);
  • #65 – Both the University of Arkansas and University of Missouri (26);
  • #74 – University of Alabama (20);
  • #78 – University of Oklahoma (18);
  • #87 – Auburn University (16); and
  • #90 – University of Georgia (15).

The only two SEC schools not in the top 100 were the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University.

The University of California topped the list with 546 utility patents issued, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology came in at the #2 position with 365. The full report can be found here.
