Former Techstars participant executes an R&D agreement with ORNL
Boulder, CO-based Silvis Materials was in the inaugural cohort of the “Techstars Industries of the Future Accelerator” in Knoxville.
Silvis Materials, one of the 10 start-ups that participated in the inaugural cohort of the “Techstars Industries of the Future Accelerator” in Knoxville, announced that the company has entered into a Collaborative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to develop and commercialize formaldehyde-free, bio-based adhesives for the building materials industry.
Described as a pioneer in sustainable material innovation, Patty Ferreira, Chief Executive Officer of Silvis Materials, characterized it as a groundbreaking partnership that aims to tackle the urgent need for healthier, more sustainable building solutions.
“This partnership with ORNL is a significant milestone for Silvis Materials,” she said. “By merging our innovative technology with ORNL’s exceptional research capabilities, we aim to accelerate the adoption of sustainable building materials and address critical environmental and health challenges.”
Founded in August 2020, Silvis Materials is dedicated to reducing reliance on fossil-based materials with its 100 percent bio-based, patented binders. Headquartered at its private lab on the University of Colorado Boulder(CU Boulder) campus, the company has received funding and support from the National Science Foundation through Phase I and II Small Business Innovation Research awards, a Colorado Advanced Industries grant, Fellowships with the MIT e14 Fund, LaunchTN, Techstars, GFI Partners of Boston, Plug and Play, Suzano Cycle Momentum, and CU Boulder.
Silvis Materials expects to commercialize its patented technology in 2026, with paid pilots available in 2025.
