Five TN university teams beat the S&P 500 Total Return Index for CY22

They were participants in the Tennessee Valley Authority’s "Investment Challenge Program" which supports education and provides investment opportunities that enhance classroom learning.

Nearly one-half of the 25 university teams participating in the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) “Investment Challenge Program” (ICP) beat the S&P 500 Total Return Index for the calendar year 2022.

The 11 teams that exceeded the baseline included five from Tennessee: Austin Peay State University, East Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Vanderbilt University.

The ICP is one of TVA’s workforce development initiatives that allows university student teams to actively manage stock portfolios under the guidance of faculty members and within investment guidelines established and monitored by TVA. Teams that outperform the S&P 500 in a calendar year earn performance awards for their respective universities, and one of the 11 teams that was not identified produced returns in excess of more than 1,000 basis points above that of the S&P 500.

Through 2023, the program has grown to $11 million primarily through positive investment returns. ICP teams have earned more than $1.3 million in performance awards for their schools over the life of the program. Having just completed its 25th year, the ICP has involved more than 10,000 students.
