Downtown Knoxville Alliance cuts ribbon on new office in Old City

Historically, the organization invests in improvements, services, and promotions that strengthen the heart of Knoxville.

Since the organization’s founding in 1993, the Downtown Knoxville Alliance (DKA) has snuggled into the Knoxville Chamber offices in Market Square. During their inception, Market Square was on the “up and up,” Gay Street was being revitalized, and developers were breathing energetic life into downtown.

Today, that portion of downtown looks completely different. On weekends, Market Square is packed with restaurant goers, farmers market attendees, and ice skaters in the winter. Intentional efforts by the DKA to make that location a gathering space were successful.

On Monday, the Downtown Knoxville Alliance announced the relocation of its office to the Emporium Center in the Old City of Knoxville. It’s just a few blocks over from their previous office, but it puts the organization at the center of First Fridays, the growing Arts District, and revitalization efforts catalyzed by the creation of Covenant Health Park.

“As downtown has progressed, our workload and programs have changed… We work with more than 200 businesses – retail businesses, merchants, and service providers- and we also look at the quality of life downtown to make sure it’s safe, beautiful, and enjoyable for our residents and visitors,” said Michele Hummel, the Executive Director of the Downtown Knoxville Alliance.

Hummel said they loved the Market Square area and vibe, but are looking forward to being in a new home office – in the center of all the emerging action and attractions.

“More development is going North, so I think this is going to be a really great location for us,” she said.
