Derapi’s software is helping solar panels, EVs, and other electric devices speak the same language

The company’s technology enables software developers to coordinate energy devices across neighborhoods and communities without having to build custom integrations for each manufacturer.

Thomas Lee, Founder and President of Derapi, is on a mission to make energy devices in homes and businesses work smarter together—and he’s strategically participating in Chattanooga’s Sustainable Mobility Accelerator to help make that happen.

The program, hosted by The Company Lab (CO.LAB) boasts a 100-percent partnership placement with local ecosystem partners.

Derapi is a software service company that acts as a “universal translator” for energy devices such as rooftop solar panels, home batteries, and electric vehicles.

Lee explained that his start-up’s software connects these devices to one platform that can manage them more efficiently, helping users maximize their investments while supporting a more resilient electric grid.

“Each one of those devices, each one of those manufacturers, basically has their own language,” Lee said. “I realized that software is the key to maximizing all of that value. You need to actually get these devices to work together.”

The company’s technology enables software developers to coordinate energy devices across neighborhoods and communities without having to build custom integrations for each manufacturer. Derapi handles that complexity by working directly with device makers.

Lee, an electrical engineer by training, has spent much of his career in the energy sector, particularly in solar and storage.

“I had an opportunity to join some folks to start a company, and Derapi was basically what came out of that initial effort,” he said.

Since its founding, Derapi has raised multiple rounds of funding and attracted support from top-tier climate tech and Silicon Valley investors. The company’s team brings deep experience in distributed energy management, including veterans from EnergyHub, one of the first “bring your own device” energy management platforms.

Now, Lee is turning his attention to the growing field of transportation electrification.

“There’s this huge opportunity in the electrification of transportation that we decided to participate in the Sustainable Mobility Accelerator to learn more about and uncover some more opportunities to grow,” he said.

The program is designed to support start-ups working on innovative solutions in the mobility space, and Lee sees it as a chance to deepen Derapi’s impact.

“Our team is probably one of the most experienced in this space,” he said. “We’re excited to be part of this accelerator and to explore how our technology can support a more sustainable and connected energy future.”
