Agtech VC investments on path to a record year

With the latest edition of the “AgLaunch Virtual Bootcamp” launching today (see separate feature article in today’s edition), 2021 is shaping up to be another record year for agtech venture capital investments, Kyle Welborn writes in an article for CropLife.

So far, just slightly more than $4.3 billion has been invested in the sector across 263 deals. In all of 2020, $5.15 billion was invested in this sector. If the pace holds, the 2021 investment total will be 70 percent higher than last year. In addition to increasing investment dollars, the number of deals completed is also on pace to increase 25 percent over last year.

The deals breakdown as follows: (1) 60 percent were in early stage start-ups (companies that have raised less than $10 million in capital); (2) 24 percent were in emerging stage start-ups (companies that have raised between $10 and $50 million in capital); and (3) 16 percent were in later stage start-ups (companies which have raised more than $50 million in capital).
