A look inside TVA’s major Tennessee projects

As the region outpaces the nation economically, TVA is executing one of its largest construction programs to meet demand driven by data centers, advanced manufacturing and population growth. Here's a behind-the-scenes look into Tennessee's construction projects underway.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors met recently to review progress on one of the largest generation construction programs in the agency’s history.

Mike Skaggs

With TVA’s service region experiencing one of the most significant periods of investment and economic growth in decades, the board announced that 3,770 megawatts of new capacity is currently under construction to keep pace.

This is enough capacity to power more than 2.1 million homes.

“TVA employees have continued to deliver on our mission of service, providing reliable electricity during rising demand, keeping our region’s electricity rates nationally competitive, and helping to grow our regional economy,” said Interim President and CEO Mike Skaggs.

How much of this new capacity will support Tennessee?

For Tennessee, the headline projects are Cumberland and Kingston.

In Roane County, the 1,500 MW Kingston Energy Complex is also under construction as part of the transition away from the site’s long-running coal operations. Hear from Construction Manager for Major Projects, Keenon Hethcoat, in the video above on why this development is significant.

The new 1,450 MW combined-cycle Cumberland facility in Stewart County recently hit a milestone — TVA completed the initial test-fire of its new combustion turbines earlier this month, with the facility expected to be fully operational by year-end.

A smaller but notable Tennessee project is the 20 MW battery storage facility in Vonore.

Going forward, Skaggs urged that the momentum will not stop.

“TVA will focus on becoming more efficient and more nimble as we work to modernize the grid, increase reliability, improve resilience, and ensure our investments align with Valley and national needs,” he said.
