Tennessee named a finalist for DOE Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus
Tennessee just moved a step closer to landing what could be one of the biggest nuclear projects in U.S. history — and once again, the story runs straight through Oak Ridge.
Back in April, we covered Gov. Bill Lee’s announcement that Tennessee had submitted a proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to position Oak Ridge as the premier site for a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus. Now, we’ve got word that Tennessee’s proposal has made the initial cut.
“As the global epicenter of nuclear energy, Tennessee is honored to be selected as a finalist to host a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus,” said Governor Bill Lee. “Our state answered the call during the Manhattan Project and helped shape the course of history, and Tennessee stands ready once again to advance the safe, reliable energy solutions our nation depends on.”
The DOE has stated that such campuses could attract up to $50 billion in capital investment, generate as much as $10 billion in state and local tax revenue and create nearly 25,000 jobs.
What other states advanced?
“I’m pleased to announce that after reviewing 28 applications from 26 states, the Energy Department has selected five initial contenders to explore further building Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses,” U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said.
Outside of Tennessee, Utah, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Idaho make up the other contenders. But with Oak Ridge’s strong nuclear legacy, we’re hopeful to hear more good news soon.
