USRA Energy founded in Oak Ridge to advance the nation’s priorities in AI and energy

USRA Energy will offer a distinctive combination of unique capabilities leveraging its parent company’s strengths.

A 56-year-old space research nonprofit is planting a flag in the energy ecosystem of Oak Ridge. Dr. Elsayed Talaat, president and CEO of the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), announced the launch of USRA Energy LLC this week at the AI TechX “From Lab to Market: Accelerating AI Innovation” event at Tennessee Tech.

Since 1968, the USRA has been wholly focused on technologies that impact space. They serve as a connection point between universities, research institutions, and the federal government, as it relates to space innovation, engineering, and science. They invest in leaders, promote favorable policy, and develop facilities and programs to advance the United States’ space mission.

Now, USRA is expanding into a secondary mission: powering the infrastructure that makes space exploration possible.

Talaat explained that USRA Energy was launched to focus on the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) priorities and mission, which includes using transformational AI for next-generation workforce development, nuclear innovation, scientific discovery, and mission execution.

The USRA has long aligned with DOE missions, like the Genesis Mission,” Talaat said. “Now, USRA Energy will be able to focus specifically on those things.”

By intention, the company is located in Oak Ridge to be at the center of the nuclear energy conversation. It makes sense, considering Oak Ridge will play a major role in fulfilling the Genesis Mission.

“For more than four decades, USRA has played a significant role in nuclear energy research, analysis, and workforce development, supporting federal missions and advancing scientific and technical excellence. We are excited about the future and confident that USRA Energy will advance innovations to support the nuclear renaissance,” Talaat said.

The USRA has a track record in energy and AI research that predates Tuesday’s announcement. For example, Talaat explained that the agency created the Center for Space Nuclear Research (CSNR) in partnership with the DOE in 2005 and has operated the Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS) since its inception in 1983. And in 2012, USRA joined NASA and Google to launch the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QuAIL) to help advance the evaluation of near-term quantum technologies.
