Downtown’s iconic Riverview Tower is now in the hands of Apex bank

For the first time in two decades, the second-tallest building in Knoxville's skyline is under local management.

Knoxville’s second-tallest building has a new owner, and for the first time in decades, it’s a local one.

Apex Bank has acquired Riverview Tower, the 24-story office building at 900 S. Gay Street, along with its connected 421-space parking garage.

“We are proud to make this investment because we believe deeply in Knoxville’s future,” said Dave Miller, CEO of Apex Bank, in a press release. “With 95 years of history and our headquarters in this city, we are honored to own this landmark, reaffirming our commitment to the people and places we serve.”

The tower offers more than 334,000 square feet of office space with panoramic views of the Tennessee River and the Great Smoky Mountains. It currently serves as a regional hub for financial, legal, and technology tenants, which Apex Bank intends to preserve. The bank will occupy a portion of the building itself while maintaining existing leases.

For Chairman Matt Daniels, the acquisition carries weight beyond the transaction itself.

“This acquisition is about more than real estate; it is a strategic investment in the city we call home,” Daniels said. “Bringing Riverview Tower under local ownership for the first time in decades ensures that a cornerstone of Knoxville’s skyline remains tied to the growth and stability of a local institution.”

Apex Bank purchased the building for an undisclosed price from an affiliate of Hertz Investment Group. George Brown and Taylor Thompson of SVN | Wood represented the seller in the transaction, which closed in approximately four months from the listing date. Apex Bank has selected SVN | Wood to continue leasing the office tower.
