Documotion Research Inc. announces Columbia expansion
This expansion will create almost 50 new jobs and invest $9 million in the area.
Documotion Research Inc., a pioneer in the sustainable thermal labeling industry, has announced a $9.1 million expansion of its Maury County operations. The addition of 40,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 48 new jobs signals the continued growth of Tennessee as a hub for manufacturing.
“Tennessee is leading the nation as the best state to do business because of our low-tax environment and highly skilled workforce. I’m grateful to announce Documotion Research’s expansion, which is a direct result of the strong statewide ecosystem we’ve built, and I look forward to seeing the success that follows,” said Gov. Bill Lee.
About Documotion Research
Founded in 1998, Documotion Research shifted from traditional printing to high-tech solutions after identifying a market gap for true “solution partners” rather than just hardware providers. This insight led to years of rigorous R&D to perfect StickyPOS®, a self-cleaning, linerless thermal label that has since achieved global leadership with over 50 billion labels sold.
Since its debut in 2014, the product has addressed common label complaints by reducing the environmental footprint, increasing roll capacity, boosting operational efficiency and protecting machinery with little to no residue.
Strategic Ecosystem for Expansion

Though Documotion Research was founded in California, they’ve been operating in Maury County since 2020. The decision to expand further in Tennessee, rather than seeking a new regional site, only supports the effectiveness of the state’s retention strategies.
“Expanding our operations to Maury County in 2020 was one of the best decisions our company has ever made. We have been extremely happy with the help and support from the county and state as we have grown, which is the main reason why we decided to expand our operation here instead of opening another facility in a different region,” said the company’s President, Joel Van Boom.
Market Applications
The market applications for Documotion’s technology are endless, providing niche solutions to many verticals that are important to Tennessee business owners.
In the food service sector, the labels provide reliable adhesion regardless of the environment. In healthcare, they ensure critically correct labeling for every patient and chart. It’s also suited for computer and electronics repair due to its compatibility with expensive and sensitive equipment.
Ultimately, this expansion represents a double-win for the state’s economy. Beyond the immediate victory for regional economic development, Documotion is also boosting the local supply chain by providing Tennessee businesses with access to the labeling solutions they need to scale their own operations.
