Why is TVA investing $3 million into UT, Knoxville’s Nuclear Engineering program?

More than 230 nuclear companies operate in Tennessee, and the growth of the nuclear program at the state's flagship university is an ode to the industry's rapid expansion.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), is doubling down on its capabilities. It aims to train and produce nuclear engineering talent to meet the demands of the surrounding region.

In the most recent report, containing data collected by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), East Tennessee Economic Council (ETEC), E4 Carolinas, and UTK’s Baker School for Public Policy, the state is home to at least 229 nuclear-related companies, with approximately 154 of those located in the Oak Ridge–Knoxville region.

At that time, the economic impact of nuclear in the state was about $9 billion. However, in the past two years, that number has undoubtedly grown.

Just earlier this week, we announced the news of an innovative partnership. This partnership is between UTK, Roane State Community College (RSCC), and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT). It aims to upskill students and working professionals to meet the nuclear workforce demands of the future.

The January 8 announcement of a $3 million investment from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) into UTK’s Nuclear Engineering program contributes to the development of the regional talent pipeline.

“This investment from Tennessee Valley Authority is a testament to both the strength of UT’s nuclear engineering program and the importance of the nuclear energy sector to our region,” said Chancellor Donde Plowman in the university’s press release. “We are grateful to have an industry leader like TVA investing in our expertise and working alongside us. Together, we aim to grow Tennessee’s talent pipeline, drive innovation, and help build East Tennessee’s nuclear renaissance.”

The $3 million will be used to endow the chair of UTK’s Department of Nuclear Engineering. The endowment will advance academic excellence, workforce development, and faculty recruitment within the department, which is ranked No. 3 among universities nationwide.

According to the release, the partnership between UT and TVA reflects a shared vision for advancing clean energy solutions and strengthening East Tennessee’s role as a hub for nuclear innovation. It builds on UT’s long-standing commitment to advancing reactor technology, regulatory science, and safety culture while preparing students through hands-on learning and cutting-edge research.

“By supporting the development of a highly skilled homegrown nuclear workforce, we’re ensuring that TVA and our industry partners have access to the talent needed said TVA President and CEO Don Moul. This talent is essential to meet the growing demands of the nuclear sector in East Tennessee and across the Valley.

TVA currently operates three nuclear power plants capable of generating an average of 8,275 megawatts of electricity each day. This capacity is enough to power more than 4.5 million homes and businesses. Nuclear power makes up about 42 percent of TVA’s diversified energy generation portfolio.

In addition, TVA is leading groundbreaking initiatives at its Clinch River nuclear site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It is pursuing the development of small modular reactors to produce new nuclear energy.
