GlucoSense Companion is an AI system focused on people living with diabetes

The company, which grew out of research done at Georgia Tech, is something that Jonathan Fitch, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, knows well.

Not quite three months ago, GlucoSense launched the latest version of its GlucoSense Companion, an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) system built to dynamically analyze blood sugars and uncover personalized lifestyle patterns for people living with diabetes.

The company, which grew out of research done at the Georgia Institute of Technology, is something that Jonathan Fitch, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, knows well. He and more than two million Americans live with Type 1 diabetes. In Fitch’s case, he was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 15 years ago.

He also experienced a stress-induced hypoglycemic seizure in college that caused Fitch and Co-Founder Cole Chalhub to launch the company in July 2023 and raise an investment round of $2 million at the beginning of 2024.

Describing Version 2 of the device as the equivalent of a Global Positioning System (GPS) for managing diabetes, Fitch says it puts the right tools in the hands of patients to manage their diabetes.

“It’s like a doctor in your pocket,” he adds, explaining that “all the work is happening in the background.”

Yet, it provides very significant insights for those dealing with any type of diabetes.

  1. It turns complicated graphs and data into simple insights that users can understand by analyzing glucose, sleep, exercise, nutrition and more to help its users learn how their lifestyle impacts their health.
  2. Users can snap a photo with GlucoSense, and the app will analyze the calories, carbs, proteins, and fat. “With a database of over 1 million foods, you’ll never have to guess again,” GlucoSense declares.
  3. Finally, the company notes that diabetes is never managed alone. GlucoSense allows you to share personalized insights with your loved ones and healthcare providers for truly personalized support.

The Companion, introduced in Version 2.0 of the GlucoSense app, acts as a real-time reflection tool, surfacing personalized insights that empower users to learn from their past and confidently plan for the future.

In August, the company delivered more than 250,000 insights for those dealing with the disease.

“We built the GlucoSense Companion to go beyond numbers. It’s about translating data into understanding that empowers people to take control of their health,” said Chalhub, who serves as Chief Operating Officer of GlucoSense. “Diabetes doesn’t come with a manual and day-to-day support is limited, so we built a system that helps people decode the mystery on their own.”

The company has launched pilots with major healthcare systems, including all Wellstar Hospitals in the State of Georgia, secured a digital partnership with Dexcom, a global leader in continuous glucose monitoring, and is expanding collaborations with diabetes educators and health organizations to bring its solution to more individuals across the country.

GlucoSense operates out of the Portal Innovations facility near Georgia Tech.
