EarthEn Energy launches its breakthrough Heat Battery

The device is designed for multiple energy-intensive sectors.

EarthEn Energy, a 2023 graduate of the “Innovation Crossroads” program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has launched its breakthrough Heat Battery at the RE+ Storage event held last week in Santa Clara, CA.

This next-generation long-duration energy storage solution is designed to decarbonize high-temperature industrial processes using renewable energy, delivering dispatchable, resilient, and cost-effective heat for sectors such as food and beverage, textiles, paper, and chemicals.

Developed with support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), Launch Tennessee, CalSEED, and others, the EarthEn Heat Battery stores surplus renewable electricity and releases it as high-temperature steam or hot air on demand. It offers up to 90 percent efficiency, customizable storage durations from four to 12 hours, and a scalable, modular design.

Additionally, the Heat Battery can capture and reuse waste heat from industrial processes, storing it and redirecting it back into production cycles. This reduces energy losses, increases overall thermal efficiency, and lowers fuel consumption, enabling industries to optimize their operations while cutting costs and emissions.

The EarthEn Heat Battery is designed for multiple energy-intensive sectors, including:

  1. Food & Beverage Processing (drying, boiling, sterilization);
  2. Textile and dyeing industries;
  3. Pulp and paper manufacturing;
  4. Pharmaceuticals and chemical processing; and
  5. Petrochemical and other high-temperature applications
