NuScale and ORNL to revolutionize multi-reactor site efficiency

How Oregon's SMR leader is leveraging East Tennessee's supercomputing and Al power to solve the multi-reactor puzzle.

Though NuScale Power Corp. calls Oregon home, the company is tapping into Oak Ridge’s supercomputing and AI skills to reimagine how nuclear fuel is managed across multiple reactors at a single site.

The Challenge of Scale

Optimizing fuel for a single nuclear reactor has been nailed down to a science, literally. However, managing fuel across a group of reactors? That’s some new territory.

Through this collaboration, NuScale and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) aim to enhance fuel efficiency in up to 12 reactors from a single shared fuel source.

What does this collaboration look like?

NuScale Power: Provides the small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

ORNL: Offers world-class supercomputing power and AI expertise.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE): Provides the needed dollars through the Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative.
