VCU exploring use of virtual reality games to help those with Parkinson’s disease
Clinical trials are underway at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) involving the use of immersive virtual reality games as a rehabilitation tool to help people with Parkinson’s disease, the progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement.
The idea comes from James Thomas, a Professor with VCU’s Department of Physical Therapy, who says the games are designed to get patients moving in a specific way, which helps preserve function in those muscles and maintain quality of life. Each game has different scenarios, and all are designed to progressively challenge the patient in how much and how fast they move.
