WalletHub ranks 100 metros for STEM jobs

The highest ranked Tennessee city is Knoxville at #41 followed by Nashville at #53.

WalletHub reports that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) professions are expected to grow 10.8 percent between 2022 and 2032, compared to just 2.3 percent for all other occupations. In addition, the median annual STEM wage is $97,980, compared to $44,670 for all non-STEM occupations.

To determine the best markets for STEM professionals, the personal finance website compared the 100 largest metro areas across 21 key metrics. The WalletHub data set ranged from per-capita job openings for STEM graduates to the median wage growth for STEM jobs.

What city topped the list? Austin was #1 followed by Seattle (#2), Atlanta (#3), Boston (#4), and three California cities – Sacramento (#5), San Jose (#6), and San Francisco (#7). Rounding out the top 10 were Pittsburgh, PA (#8); Madison, WI (#9); and Minneapolis (#10).

How did Tennessee cities rank? Knoxville was the highest rated at #41 followed by Nashville (#53), Chattanooga (#84), and Memphis (#95).

The evaluation was based on three broad categories, each accounting for one-third of the points. There were a number of additional criteria within these broad categories – Professional Opportunities, STEM-friendliness, and Quality of Life.
