U News | Rice University’s Office of Technology Transfer enters into a subscription agreement with Intel Corporation

The University of Utah's Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute will host its first Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) Summit later this month.

From Rice University:

Rice University’s Office of Technology Transfer has entered into a subscription agreement with Intel Corporation, which will enable the global technology leader to explore and potentially license select patented innovations developed at Rice.

Under the terms of the agreement, Intel will pay Rice an annual subscription fee, securing an option to evaluate specified Rice-patented technologies. Should Intel choose to exercise its option rights, the company may obtain a license for each selected technology at a fee.

“This agreement exemplifies Rice University’s dedication to fostering innovation and accelerating the commercialization of groundbreaking research,” said Patricia Stepp, Assistant Vice President for Technology Transfer. “By partnering with Intel, we are creating opportunities for our research to make a tangible impact in the technology sector.”

Rice is renowned for its cutting-edge research across a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. Collaborations such as this subscription agreement with Intel underscore the university’s role as a hub for transformative discoveries and industry partnerships.

From the University of Virginia:

After more than a decade of leadership at Rice University, Paul Cherukuri, the university’s top innovation executive, will be leaving his post to accept a position at the University of Virginia (UVA).

Cherukuri, Rice’s inaugural Vice President for Innovation and Chief Innovation Officer, will depart from his position at the end of September to become UVA’s Donna and Richard Tadler University Professor of Entrepreneurship and the university’s first Chief Innovation Officer.

Under Cherukuri’s leadership, the university launched pathbreaking initiatives such as the Rice Biotech Launch Pad, a Houston-based accelerator focused on expediting the translation of the university’s health and medical technology discoveries into cures, and RBL LLC, a biotech venture studio in the Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park dedicated to rapidly commercializing lifesaving medical technologies from the Launch Pad.

From the University of California, Berkeley:

The University of California, Berkeley’s (UC Berkeley) Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E), a campus-wide ecosystem focused on fostering innovations that provide long-term societal benefits, recently announced the publication of Start-up Campus: How UC Berkeley Became an Unexpected Leader in Entrepreneurship and Start-ups. The book chronicles the university’s remarkable expansion from a traditional academic institution to become the #1 university worldwide for venture-funded start-ups founded by undergraduate alumni.

Authored by Mike Alvarez Cohen, Director of Innovation Ecosystem Development at UC Berkeley, and supported by numerous members of the 100-person-strong Berkeley I&E Council, Start-up Campus offers a compelling case study for institutions navigating the tension between academic tradition and entrepreneurial impact. The book tells the inside story of Berkeley’s six-phase evolution into an innovation hub through the voices of the faculty, staff, and alumni who made it happen. From early internet pioneers and biotech breakthroughs to today’s climate-tech disruptors and mission-driven founders, the book reveals how the university built a world-class entrepreneurship ecosystem while advancing its commitment to research excellence and public service.

“Berkeley has always been a place that questions the status quo, a university where big ideas and groundbreaking discoveries come to life in support of the greater good,” said Rich Lyons, Chancellor of UC Berkeley and formerly the school’s first Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer. “Start-up Campus is a thrilling story of how we’ve channeled our dedication to innovation into building a unique and dynamic entrepreneurship ecosystem. We have developed a new model for how a university can drive economic growth and mobility while extending its public mission and societal impact.”

From Stony Brook University:

Stony Brook University is launching its inaugural Brook & Beyond Challenge, giving faculty and graduate students the chance to pitch breakthrough ideas and compete for up to $50,000 in milestone-based funding.

The competition will culminate on December 5 with an in-person showcase where finalists, who will be announced September 12, will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges, investors, and industry experts. Finalists will attend weekly boot camp-style virtual/live sessions in preparation for the live showcase. Winners will be announced on that day, which will kick off a year of funding, mentorship, and commercialization support.

The Brook & Beyond Challenge is open to teams only (at least one member must be from Stony Brook University) and offers two funding tracks based on the stage of development.

  1. Track 1: Ideation — For early-stage concepts still in the brainstorming or prototyping phase. Teams can win up to $10,000 to validate feasibility, define customer needs or develop an initial prototype.
  2. Track 2: Proof of Concept — For more advanced projects with a working prototype or preliminary data. Teams can win up to $50,000 to refine their technology, prepare for scaling or connect with commercialization partners.

From Loyola University Maryland:

Loyola University Maryland has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Maryland Department of Commerce to establish the Simon Professorship in Entrepreneurship. The award was made through the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), established to support endowed chairs at Maryland institutions of higher education.

“At Loyola University Maryland, we are excited to be cultivating a culture of innovation within our community,” said President Terrence M. Sawyer. “This grant will make it possible for us to invest more deeply in inspiring our students as entrepreneurs and innovators, and I look forward to seeing the impact it has in the life of our University.”

Jon Weinstein, Assistant Teaching Professor at Loyola’s Sellinger School of Business and Management and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Loyola’s Simon Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will hold the Simon Professorship in Entrepreneurship. Weinstein has a background in entrepreneurship, public office, management consulting, and executive coaching.

The state award was made possible as a match to a $1.5 million gift from Nick Simon and Susie Simon, both alumni. Namesakes of Loyola’s Simon Center and new Simon Professorship, the Simons helped establish the center and made significant investments in the center’s work promoting economic and entrepreneurial success in Baltimore.

From the University of Utah:

The University of Utah’s Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute will host its first Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) Summit on September 25 at the David Eccles School of Business—marking the launch of the school’s new ETA program, the first of its kind in the Mountain West.

ETA, a career path that allows entrepreneurs to acquire and grow existing businesses rather than starting from scratch, has surged in popularity since its origins at Stanford in the 1980s. Today, programs at Stanford and Harvard have helped make ETA a mainstream route into private equity.

The summit will feature keynotes, panels, and breakout sessions covering every stage of the ETA process—searching, buying, operating, and exiting a business. Attendees will include investors, entrepreneurs, business owners, and graduate students.
