The South shows its entrepreneurial muscle

A new study by ClickUp using Kauffman Indicators of Entrepreneurship data finds that states in the southeast region produced more entrepreneurs than any other area in the U.S. in 2021, with Florida topping the list and Georgia coming in third.

If you thought California or New York might have the highest rates of new entrepreneurship, you would be wrong.

A new study by ClickUp using Kauffman Indicators of Entrepreneurship data finds that states in the American South produced more entrepreneurs than any other region in the U.S. in 2021 with Florida topping the list and Georgia coming in at #3.

This analysis of Kauffman data ranks states by the rate of new business owners as a percentage of the state population. It includes incorporated and unincorporated companies, as well as those with and without employees. Ties are broken by the number of jobs created per capita. Start-up one-year survival rates are also included but aren’t factored into the ranking.

According to this article about the findings, Southern states like Texas, Oklahoma – not sure I would call in part of the South, and Arkansas have spent recent years vying for high-tech jobs through highly publicized incentive deals, often landing among the final contenders for new manufacturing plants and headquarters relocations. Electric vehicle startups, which had immense investor momentum in 2020 and 2021, are just one example.

So, what were the top 15 states? A third were current or soon-to-be members of the Southeastern Conference. New Mexico was #2 between Florida and Georgia, followed by Oklahoma (#4), California (#5), Vermont (#6), Colorado (#7), Alaska (#8), Maine (#9), Wyoming (#10), Arizona (#11), New York (#12), New Jersey (#13), Missouri (#14), and Texas (#15).
