The Dry Dock: Nashville’s newest entrepreneurial launchpad
Building the next generation of deep tech startups through an alumni-led, student-powered foundry at Vanderbilt University.

The Dry Dock, a startup studio and deep tech foundry, has launched in partnership with Vanderbilt University to revolutionize how companies are built.
The hub prioritizes long-term company building over pitch competitions or short-term accelerators. This structural approach minimizes startup risk while encouraging the bold thinking required for frontier technology innovation.
Solving for Market Demand
The Dry Dock differentiates itself by reversing the common “idea-first” startup method. Instead, the studio utilizes problem-first venture creation.
Each venture begins with sponsor-defined challenges. By focusing on solving issues that consumers are already willing to pay for, the studio ensures there is pre-existing buy-in and validity before even getting started.
Engineering the Ideal Team
The Dry Dock knows that a rising number of co-founders part ways due to personality or work ethic differences. To ensure success is not left to chance, the program uses evidence-based team formation.
The Dry Dock matches alumni and students based on data-driven principles proven to increase startup longevity, such as skills, industry experience and execution capability.
Alumni-Led, Student-Powered
The studio’s leadership structure positions alumni as the primary operators and decision-makers. Students join these teams in functional roles, including product development, engineering, operations and go-to-market strategy.
This model represents peak workforce development. Students gain hands-on experience by building real ventures, while alumni provide the professional mentorship and gain the necessary manpower to scale.
Getting Involved
Students interested in participation must apply by Monday, March 9. We look forward to seeing which teams are selected, and following their stories.
