Tennessee rated third best state to do business and other Knoxville news

Area Development has released its annual list of “Top States for Doing Business,” with Georgia making number one on the list for the eighth year in a row.

But the Volunteer State was not far behind, though it did fall a spot this year, coming in at number three. Texas moved up the list this year, taking the number two spot. The Southeast took numerous spots in the top 10 of the list, with South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama getting spots four, five, and six respectively.

In addition to the top 20 states for doing business in 2021, the publication gives a top 10 for the “Overall Cost of Doing Business.” Tennessee was in a three-way tie for fourth place on that list, along with Texas and South Carolina. Georgia was number one on that list, followed by Alabama and North Carolina, which tied for second.

The publication also broke down 12 different categories that impacted business, such as available real estate, workforce development programs, and business incentive programs. Southern states made the top spots in several of these categories, with Georgian and Tennessee both making the top five in a handful of them.
