SSTI analyzes SBIR and STTR awards since 2013 by metro area

The latest issue of the SSTI Weekly Digest includes an analysis of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology (STTR) Awards for 254 metropolitan areas across the nation. Six Tennessee communities are among the 254 – Chattanooga, Johnson City, Kingsport/Bristol, Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville.

The interactive, searchable map available here highlights the average SBIR/STTR awards per year from 2013-17 for a metro area, how 2017 compared to previous years, the concentration of SBIR/STTR awards, and the area’s ranking in these categories.

Data by these cities are as follows:

  • Average Award Ranking from 2013-17 – Knoxville/Oak Ridge is highest at 74 followed by Nashville (85), Chattanooga (139), Memphis (147), Kingsport/Bristol (181), and Johnson City (207).
  • Concentration Ranking – Knoxville/Oak Ridge (64), Chattanooga (132), Memphis (186), Johnson City (188), and Kingsport/Bristol (210).
  • 2017 Versus Previous Four Years – Chattanooga (33), Nashville (36), Johnson City (153), Kingsport/Bristol (172), Memphis (176), and Knoxville/Oak Ridge (202).
