Spartanburg Community College’s Spark Center SC a boon for businesses in community

Years ago Spartanburg Community College (SCC) turned a former distribution facility in Duncan, SC into a massive “flex space” targeted to start-ups and other types of businesses looking to expand, reorganize or launch innovative new ventures.

Named the Spark Center SC, the more than 400,000-square foot facility allows for flexibility in design to suit the needs of the individual client. In exchange for services provided, business clients consent to locate their permanent facility in Spartanburg County.

Since its founding in June 2006, Spark Center SC has assisted more than 70 companies with nearly 30,000 jobs created and generated over $1,000,000,000 in earnings. SCC offers four core services at the Spark Center:

  • Soft Landings Program that provides furnished office space and basic services for qualifying domestic and foreign companies who intend to assess the market or start new operations in Spartanburg County;
  • Workforce Employment Services, in partnership with SC Works Upstate and readySCTM, that provides recruiting, hiring and training assistance to qualified companies;
  • Small Business Incubator that offers services to position new start-up businesses for greater success by providing the foundation needed to get started through collaboration with supporting agencies including the Small Business Development Center and SCORE; and
  • Special Projects assistance that provides space that may be used to beta test a new product line or manufacturing process as well as the temporary warehousing of inventory.
