From Tampa, FL:

Moffitt Cancer Center has become the first standalone cancer center in the world to open a Nikon Center of Excellence. This prestigious achievement highlights Moffitt’s commitment to cutting-edge imaging technology and groundbreaking cancer research.

Nikon Centers of Excellence are recognized worldwide for their advanced imaging capabilities and contributions to scientific innovation. With this accomplishment, Moffitt joins a distinguished group of institutions that serves as hubs for high-end microscopy, imaging techniques, and technology-driven research collaborations.

“At Moffitt, we are dedicated to advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes through innovation,” said  Greg Sawyer, Ph.D., Chair of the Bioengineering Department at Moffitt. “Opening a Nikon Center of Excellence further strengthens our ability to leverage state-of-the-art imaging technology to deepen our understanding of cancer and accelerate the development of new therapies.”

The Nikon Center of Excellence will catalyze Moffitt’s role as a hub for scientific discovery, providing scientists with access to state-of-the-art imaging platforms, including live-cell and super resolution imaging systems. This partnership with Nikon brings world-class imaging capabilities to the forefront of cancer research, enabling Moffitt’s researchers to visualize cellular and molecular processes with unprecedented precision and uncover deeper insights into cancer biology and novel treatment approaches. Researchers can now design experiments in real time at a cellular level, opening a window to how cancer cells react and behave. These observations can be analyzed using machine learning and integrated mathematical oncology to better understand and potentially improve dosing in future treatments.

From Jacksonville, FL:

Seagate Space Corporation, a venture redefining vertical launch and landing infrastructure, has officially announced its formation. Focused on the development of offshore launch platforms, Seagate Space will bring maritime innovations that are both cost-effective and rapidly deployable to the industry.

“Seagate Space was founded on a vision to bring launch facilities into the 21st century,” says Sean Fortener, Seagate Space’s Co-Founder and formerly head of innovation at Crowley Maritime. “The modern space industry has evolved dramatically – today’s focus is on frequent, responsive, efficient access to space. Our systems will be built to enable this new breed of launch vehicles.”

Seagate Space’s launch platforms promise a lower cost, modular, and mobile solution to address the increasing demand for launch facilities. By moving launches offshore, the company unlocks the vastness of the ocean as a solution to the barriers to launch from land-based locations – an undertaking they believe is paramount for delivering on the promises of the Orbital Age.

From the State of Florida:

Seven leading entrepreneur support organizations from across the United States, including several from Florida, are joining forces to tackle critical challenges impacting our oceans, coastal communities, and economy. This powerful collaboration is made possible thanks to a $13.9 million award from the NOAA Ocean Enterprise Accelerators program.

As a result, Braid TheoryOcean ExchangeSt. Pete Innovation DistrictSeaworthy CollectiveTampa Bay WaveUniversity of South Florida, and World Ocean Council are working under The Continuum to launch the new collaboration. This groundbreaking partnership model is poised to set the national standard for BlueTech and blue economy accelerator programs, serving as a blueprint to advance innovative ocean and environmentally friendly data solutions, making them more scalable, efficient, and interconnected.

Over four years, the funding will establish a high-impact network of business accelerators and commercialization programs, fostering hundreds of startups tackling environmental and ocean challenges. These participating organizations will leverage their collective programs, expertise, and networks to accelerate the deployment of data-driven ocean economy solutions, ensuring the U.S. remains a global leader in technology innovation and economic growth.

The deadline to apply for the first 12-week accelerator is April 3 at this link.

From the State of Alabama:

Like Launch Tennessee and its Tennessee House program over last weekend, Innovate Alabama‘s InvestAL program has used the SXSW event that continues this week to showcase the state, and one of the ways that it is doing so is to cast the spotlight on available capital.

Halogen Ventures, led by investor and entrepreneur Jesse Draper, has been at the forefront of championing female-founded start-ups. The firm has invested in more than 75 start-ups with a collective market value exceeding $15 billion and is now making a $10 million investment in Alabama’s female founders through the InvestAL program.

“Alabama has all the ingredients to be a leader in technology – from great universities to the presence of over 50 Fortune 500 companies,” said Draper, founding Partner of Halogen Ventures. “Through this collaboration, not only do we plan to catalyze the growth of the Alabama tech ecosystem, create more jobs and startup more future female billionaires, but we see a massive opportunity in healthcare, manufacturing agtech and other verticals that we look forward to capitalizing on. This is a real opportunity that more investors need to jump on!”

From Spartanburg, SC:

A not-yet two-year-old program, which is coming up on its second anniversary in May, has 66 mentors working with a current class of 27 mentees. It is part of a range of services provided by Power Up Spartanburg, a OneSpartanburg initiative aimed at supporting and growing the county’s small and minority-owned businesses.

According to an article in the Upstate Business Journal, Jasmine Herbert, a business owner selected to be a mentee in the pilot phase of the mentoring program, had a decade of corporate human resources experience before she started a consulting firm, The Employee Handbook: Career & Workforce Solutions, to help job seekers with career coaching and development. The biggest immediate benefit of working with her two mentors was getting an outside perspective.

Now, she has joined two others in mentoring new participants.
