
Former Sears stores find new use as innovation district anchors
Birmingham’s Innovation Depot was one of the first, but others are emerging.
What are we talking about? It’s reuse of buildings that formerly housed Sears retail stores. Innovation Depot opened in the city more than a decade ago and reports an economic impact of $2.65 billion in the Birmingham area over the last five years.
The latest Sears building reuse is in Houston where Rice University has unveiled plans to transform the mammoth 270,000 square foot Midtown Sears property into the Ion to serve as the hub of Houston’s downtown broader innovation district.
