ORNL article chronicles a decade of collaboration with what was once a Knoxville start-up
The company was launched as Volunteer Aerospace LLC before being acquired by Beehive Industries.
Karen Dunlap, Communications Coordinator for the Energy Science and Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has a lengthy article on the nearly decade-long journey of Jonaaron Jones and his two partners – his wife, Rachel, and Devon Burkle.
The company that was initially known as Volunteer Aerospace LLC started in the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) operated by ORNL, but moved in late 2017 into a building in the Hardin Valley Area of West Knoxville. It enjoyed rapid growth as the company added more additive manufacturing capabilities and was acquired by Beehive Industries, which was located in Deerfield Beach, FL, at the time. Beehive Industries is now headquartered in Englewood, CO.
The story relates how, as Jones’s mentor, Suresh Babu, a former University of Tennessee-ORNL Governor’s Chair of Advanced Manufacturing, connected him to MDF experts and resources, as well as partners within the aerospace, defense, and energy industries.
Today, Jones is President and General Manager of Beehive Industries’ external parts business, and the company continues to demonstrate what it means to partner with the MDF to drive technical and economic growth for the United States.
