Orion Therapeutics wins LSTCON “Venture Forum”

The start-up located at the University of Tennessee (UT) Research Park bested three other competitors from around the state.

Orion Therapeutics Inc., a Knoxville-based therapeutic company, won this year’s “Venture Forum” and a $10,000 cash prize from Holland & Knight that brought the curtain down on LSTCON, the annual Life Science Tennessee conference held Wednesday at the Westin Hotel in Nashville.

Pitched by Jennifer Zachry, Co-Founder and Director of Business Development, Orion has developed a lipid nanoparticle delivery system platform for gene therapies that accelerates early stage RNA programs to market by providing a safe, effective, scalable, and targeted delivery system for a broad range of disease applications to ultimately meet unmet clinical need.

In winning the competition, the member of the Spark Innovation Center at the University of Tennessee (UT) Research Park bested three other start-ups from around the state. They were:

  • EndoShunt, a Nashville-based medical device company that is developing a first-of-its-kind temporary, minimally invasive hemorrhage control device that creates a size adjustable channel inside the inferior vena cava (IVC) or aorta – ensuring a patient’s blood continues to flow to where it should without flowing out of where it shouldn’t. It captured the “People’s Choice Award” and a $1,000 prize courtesy of the UT Research Foundation.
  • MiCare Path, a Memphis-based digital health care solution that connects patients and providers with both the technology and personalized care service proven to increase patient engagement in their care, improve critical health outcomes, and reduce hospital readmissions. The start-up has created a reimbursable, universal enterprise platform consisting of 12+ connected devices, a cloud system with data aggregation and clinical workflows, actionable visual analytics in support of population health, and a mobile app with short message service (SMS), patient education, and engagement.
  • VoluMetrix, another Nashville-based medical device company dedicated to creating a new wave of solutions for vital monitoring to enhance well-being. As the pioneers of non-invasive venous waveform technology, VoluMetrix is partnering closely with patients and practitioners to develop pathways toward the optimal implementation and utilization of their technology, from hospital to home.
