Newlab opens fourth location in New Orleans

The company's inaugural location in New York City is home to more than 250 deep tech start-ups and more than 1,000 entrepreneurs, inventors, investors, and optimists.

In 2016, conventional wisdom understood the diversity, density, and adversity of a city like New York to be an impediment to innovation, rather than a powerful reagent for the technology of the next industrial revolution.

Yet, an organization named Newlab took the ruins of a turn-of-the-century naval shipyard in Brooklyn and turned it into something new: A place for the people crazy enough to build hardware in New York City to find the tools, space, and community to supercharge their ambition and create a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable world. Today, Newlab New York is home to more than 250 deep tech start-ups and more than 1,000 entrepreneurs, inventors, investors, and optimists working together to address critical challenges in energy, mobility, and materials.

In early 2023, Newlab opened a second headquarters in Detroit, MI, as part of Ford’s billion-dollar mobility innovation district, transforming Albert Kahn’s abandoned post office-turned-book depository into a state-of-the-art center for mobility tech.

Now, the folks behind Newlab have expanded again, this time to New Orleans, LA. That follows the expansion to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia earlier this year with Newlab Riyadh. The organization says it is another major step toward building a global network of Newlab hubs in geographies where we can remove barriers for startups commercializing critical technologies.

“Our ambition in Louisiana is to help the state harness its generational industrial legacy to stimulate economic growth across future energy value chains. We will do this by building a thriving critical technology start-up ecosystem powered by the state’s historical infrastructure, skilled workforce, and leading industrial players,” Newlab states in this news release.
