New rankings announced for U.S. patents issued in 2023

Thirteen of the top 100 are either in the Southeast or the Mid-Atlantic. Duke University is the highest rated at #29.

The National Academy of Inventors has released its annual ranking of the top 100 granted U.S. utility patents in 2023, and the highest-ranked university in the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic region is the University of Florida Research Foundation Inc. with 142.

The next highest ranked institution is Duke University at #29 with 92 patents issued followed by the University of South Florida, tied at #35 with 88, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, tied at #37 with 87 patents issued. Others ranked in the top 100 were:

  • #48 – Texas A&M University System with 66 patents;
  • #53 (tie) – University of Central Florida Research Foundation Inc. with 57 patents issued;
  • #56 (tie) – Vanderbilt University with 56 issued patents;
  • #58 (tie) – Florida International University Board of Trustees with 55 patents issued;
  • #60 – North Carolina State University with 53 issued patents;
  • #63 – University of South Carolina with 50 patents issued;
  • #66 (tie) – Emory University with 48 issued patents;
  • #91 (tie) – Florida State University Research Foundation Inc. with 38 patents issued;
  • #94 (tie) – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with 36 issued patents; and
  • #100 (tie) – University of Kentucky Research Foundation with 33 patents issued.

Four of the top five are U.S. universities. Leading the pack is the University of California system with 546 patents issued followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 365, and the University of Texas System at 235. In fifth place is Stanford University with 199 patents issued.
