Now in its 11th year, GSER 2023, as it is called, provides insights into the world’s leading start-up ecosystems, emerging trends, and key challenges facing entrepreneurs. The report is based on extensive research and analysis of data from 3.5 million start-ups across 290 global ecosystems and over a decade of independent research and providing policy advice to more than 145 clients in more than 50 countries to date.
“We hope that members of our community will access this report to help gain a valuable perspective on the global start-up landscape,” the authors at Startup Genome write. “The report provides actionable recommendations for entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and other stakeholders looking to drive innovation and economic growth even in these challenging times.”
Here are a few conclusions:
- The top three ecosystems have maintained their positions from 2020, with Silicon Valley remaining at the top, followed by New York City and London tied at #2.
- Boston and Beijing have both slipped out of the top five to #6 and #7 respectively, losing two positions each. This has paved the way for Los Angeles to rise to #4 and Tel Aviv to #5, both gaining two spots.
- Miami has also made impressive progress, making it into the top 30 ecosystems at #23, an improvement of 10 positions from last year.
- Other U.S. cities in the top 20 are Seattle (#10); Washington, DC (#11); San Diego (#16); and Chicago (#19).
