Knoxville leads state as best market for STEM workers

All four of Tennessee’s metro areas ranked in the top 100 in WalletHub’s latest analysis of the best markets for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) workers. Knoxville placed the highest at #42 followed by Nashville (#43), Chattanooga (#85), and Memphis (#96).

According to WalletHub as described in this article, the organization looked at three key dimensions – “Professional Opportunities,” “STEM-Friendliness,” and “Quality of Life.” Then, the business evaluated those dimensions using 19 relevant metrics and finally determined each metro area’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order its sample.

How did each Tennessee city rank in those three dimensions in the order listed above?

  • Knoxville – 36, 58 and 32.
  • Nashville – 22, 32 and 78.
  • Chattanooga – 59, 87 and 76.
  • Memphis – 55, 81 and 97.
