This milestone - 1,060 issued or patent applications filed - that further solidifies its technological advantage in trapped-ion quantum computing.

College Park, MD-based IonQ Inc., which has been on an acquisition binge, has also amassed a strong intellectual property portfolio (IP) through those actions and its own developments.

The leading commercial quantum computing and quantum networking company announced a significant advancement in its IP portfolio last week. This milestone – 1,060 issued or patent applications filed – that further solidifies its technological advantage in trapped-ion quantum computing.

“IonQ’s robust and growing portfolio of patents is a direct result of the strategy set forth years ago, which entails developing and owning quantum technologies across multiple industries and applications,” said Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IonQ. “These patents position IonQ to continue to develop scalable, high-performance, cost-effective systems that accelerate the timeline for unparalleled commercial quantum advantage.”

Less than a year ago, IonQ acquired Qubitekk Inc., a leading Vista, CA-based quantum networking company, which was the original partner with EPB on the quantum network being built in Chattanooga. Qubitekk brought 116 patents to the party along with two pending applications.
