Google hub in Durham will bring new jobs, challenges
Is it a win or a challenge? The answer is that it depends on the lens through which you are looking.
Late last week, Internet giant Google announced plans to create an engineering hub focused on cloud computing in Durham, NC that, over time, will create 1,000 jobs. Sounds great? And, for good measure, Duke University has been a major player in the recruitment as described in this article that quotes Michael Schoenfeld, Duke’s Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations, who is also a former Vanderbilt University administrator.
Well, as we continued to follow coverage by WRAL TechWire, we read about the other perspective in a region that is already short of tech-based talent. Recruiters went so far as to describe it as a “small business massacre.”
It all goes to prove that progress does not come without disruption.
