Filling the Gaps | How LaborExchange is powering Knoxville’s workforce

Last year alone, Labor Exchange successfully placed 623 people into jobs, making a tangible contribution to the regional economy and the lives of local families.

Across the country, the nature of work is shifting toward flexibility. The contingent workforce hit over 40% of the total global workforce in 2025, and is expected to continue to grow in 2026.

Kelly Peterson, owner of LaborExchange, is taking advantage of this trend, connecting eager workers with the businesses that need them.

The company was founded in 2013 by Peterson’s late husband, whose extensive background in human resources made the transition into staffing a natural fit.

“I have found, after taking the business over from my husband, that I love putting people to work. I have the best job in the world, honestly,” Peterson said. “Every day we get to come in here and put people in jobs that they want, they need.”

The Realities of Modern Staffing

For many companies, the hiring process can be a significant administrative and financial burden. The American Staffing Association notes that while firms may be hesitant to make long-term investments in permanent headcount, they are increasingly turning to temporary workers to scale and maintain productivity without the associated risk.

This is where LaborExchange steps in, providing a versatile workforce that includes construction workers, landscapers, warehouse staff and manufacturing personnel. This talent pool is particularly vital in Tennessee, where the growing demand for nuclear construction and advanced manufacturing requires a steady supply of labor.

Deep roots in South Knoxville

Peterson credits much of Labor Exchange’s success to their strong ties within the local community. Located in the heart of South Knoxville, the agency serves as a vital link for residents looking for steady, accessible work.

“We are in the south Knoxville community, which has been, honestly, a blessing. There are so many people in the south Knoxville area that rely on us to give them jobs to pay their bills. And I have really gotten joy out of giving people work in this area,” Peterson explained.

While she acknowledges that the need for work can sometimes stem from challenging or sensitive financial situations, she finds immense value in the human element of her business. Getting to know the life stories of the people who walk through her doors is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

Peterson believes this empathy and authentic care are what differentiate LaborExchange from larger, more clinical staffing firms.

“We truly form relationships with the people that we work with. My staff does a great job of finding ways to care for people, helping them at their point of need, and it seems to work well for us.”
