Ballad Ventures invests in lifesaving device

LifeFlow® is designed to help clinicians more effectively and efficiently deliver blood and IV fluids to critically ill patients.

410 Medical Inc., a Durham, NC-based medical device company developing innovative technologies for emergency and critical care, has announced the completion of its $7.5 million Series B financing, and one of the company’s new investors is Ballad Ventures.

In a social media post about its investment, the Johnson City-based venture fund, the investment arm of Ballad Health, noted that 410 Medical’s lead product, LifeFlow®, started as a pilot at Niswonger Children’s Hospital and quickly demonstrated the “ability to deliver timely and effective resuscitation to patients. The results allowed us to expand the use of the device to facilities across the enterprise through strong clinical leadership (and) with support from the Ballad Health Innovation Center.”

This round of funding, with an initial closing late in 2022, was led by Hatteras Venture Partners with further participation from new and existing investors including Orlando Health Ventures, Ballad, Catalyst by Wellstar, OSF Healthcare, and WakeMed.

LifeFlow® is designed to help clinicians more effectively and efficiently deliver blood and IV fluids to critically ill patients. Severe sepsis affects more than one million adults and children each year in the U.S., and it is the most frequent cause of death in hospitalized patients. Trauma is the leading cause of death in patients less than 45 years old.

In these and other conditions leading to hypotension and shock, rapid delivery of blood or IV fluid is a life-saving therapy, yet with traditional infusion methods, providers often fail to achieve timely resuscitation or adhere to published guidelines. Since FDA clearance in 2016, LifeFlow has been adopted at many leading healthcare systems in the U.S., including Orlando Health, Ballad Health, and Wellstar.

“Incorporating this leading-edge medical device into our pediatric and emergency settings has already made a significant impact in our ability to deliver timely and effective resuscitation to patients in need, elevating their chances of survival and promoting their overall well-being,” said Amit Vashist, Chief Clinical Officer for Ballad Health and Clinical Advisor for Ballad Ventures.

410 Medical was founded in 2013.
