Grow Bioplastics wins competition in Oregon, now pitching in Denver

Grow BioplasticsThere’s more good news for the Grow Bioplastics team, this time taking home the top prize and $10,000 in the ACS Green Chemistry Institute’s business plan competition. ACS is the American Chemical Society.

Co-Founder Tony Bova told us the company won the event held last week in Portland, OR. It is billed as the only business plan competition “devoted to innovations in sustainable green chemistry and engineering.”

The Knoxville-based startup dedicated to improving food sustainability by offering farmers and gardeners renewable, biodegradable plant containers and mulch films that eliminate oil based plastics from our agricultural system.

Thus far, Grow Bioplastics has won more than $52,000 as it has successfully competed in a number of these events held around the country.

Next stop on the competition tour is this week in Denver when the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) hosts its “Cleantech University Prize (CUP)” finals. A total of 21 teams that won or were runners-up in regional competitions hosted by DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program will vie for $100,000 in prizes.

The field will be narrowed down to eight finalists after tomorrow’s competition, and a winner will be selected on the final day which is Thursday.

Bova tells us the team has several more competitions coming-up in the next few months.
